(...) A horse’s legs should be washed frequently, especially when they are covered in dirt and mud. After washing, legs should be wiped dry, and especially the hocks should be dried most carefully. There should not be even the smallest amount of mud, sand or dust on them, and the rider should report any scratches or redness noticed.
(...) The rider is required to immediately report any changes in the condition of his horse’s hooves. In the winter, immediately after horses are returned to the stable, any loosened horse- shoe nails should be removed so that the horse cannot injure itself. It is forbidden to groom horses while they are eating.
A sergeant orders privates of his platoon to groom and feed the horses assigned to those cavalrymen that are temporarily absent. When there is morning exercising of horses close to the barracks, it is sufficient to just give them a morning rub down, whereas they must be properly groomed after returning from exercises or any rides.
