Latem poić należy częściej i zaleca się pojenie na noc, aby konie z rana mniej piły, a co zatem idzie w ciągu dnia mniej potniały. Do wodopoju konia należy prowadzić stępa, przy- czem jeden żołnierz prowadzi dwa konie. O ile wodopój jest oddalonym, prowadzący może jechać wierzchem, w tym wypadku konie powinny być prowadzone nie na kantarach, lecz na uzdeczkach. Przy pojeniu należy wyjąć z pyska wędzidło; pozostawia się je tylko wtedy, jeżeli istnieje obawa, że koń będzie pił zbyt chciwie, pożytecznem jest przyuczenie konia do picia z wędzidłem w pysku. Zgrzanego konia poić nie wolno. Jeżeli był bardzo zgrzany i spocony, to poić można dopiero po upływie 3–2 godzin, a i wtedy nie dużą ilością wody. Podczas przemarszów, jeżeli zachodzi potrzeba pojenia, można to uczynić, lecz pod warunkiem, że niezwłocznie po wodopoju konie ruszą w dalszą drogę i będą mogły się rozgrzać.
